Tone Alerted Weather Radios

The Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency has requested that local municipalities assist in its efforts to promote tone alerted weather radios for every home, apartment, business and special needs facility in the County. These radios are activated from the National Weather Service in State College and can simutaneously provide warning to everyone that has one, 24 hours a day. They can be activated for natural or man-made emergencies.

These radios are available through RadioShack® or can be purchased on the web. They are manufactured by several companies, including Midland®, First Alert® and Oregon Scientific. The important thing to look for is whether it will receive local SAME alerts in addition to weather/AM/FM bands. The cost of the radios can be between $50 and $100.

The Elizabethtown Regional Emergency Management Agency has also stated that this information will normally come through on local news stations on the television and local radio stations as an alert from the National Weather Service. The Elizabethtown Regional Emergency Management Agency covers Elizabethtown Borough, Mount Joy Township and West Donegal Township.
