Bicycle Friendly Business Designation

Borough Of Elizabethtown named a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Business

by the League of American Bicyclists

Incorporated in 1827 Elizabethtown is a small historic town of just under 12,000 residents

On September 7, 2016, the League of American Bicyclists recognized the Borough of Elizabethtown with a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFBSM) award, joining nearly 1,200 visionary businesses from across the country.

With the announcement of 72 new and renewing BFBs today, the Borough of Elizabethtown joins a cutting-edge group of 1,232 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies in 49 states and Washington, D.C., that are transforming the American workplace.

“The business community’s investment in bicycling is playing a central role in making the country a safer, happier, and more sustainable place to live and work,” said Amelia Neptune, League Bicycle Friendly Business Program Manager. “We applaud this new round of businesses, including the Borough of Elizabethtown, for leading the charge in creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.”

The Borough of Elizabethtown encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as conveniently located bicycle racks and access to a fleet bike for short Borough business errands.  Staff members share a new perspective for bicyclists through participation in a motorist education initiative.

Elizabethtown Mayor Chuck Mummert acknowledges the Borough’s efforts and those of other businesses to achieve the designation “We are proud to join other businesses in Lancaster County as a designated Bicycle Friendly Business.”  Other businesses with designation are Dream Ride Projects (Gold), Recumbent Cycles (Silver), Cargas Systems (Bronze), the City of Lancaster (Bronze), Gretna Bike Shop (Bronze), Lancaster General Health (now PennMedicine) Duke Street facility (Bronze), and Lemon Street Market (Bronze).

Borough Council President Marc Hershey noted that “our priorities for a focus on our downtown and community include biking as a transportation option in our Borough, and we work to lead by example in our business decisions.  Our first community application for bicycle friendly designation and its subsequent feedback report assisted us with our business application.  It has proven an invaluable tool provided by the League.”

Moving forward, the Borough of Elizabethtown will have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the League to build on its bicycle-friendly designation. When its employees and residents bike, great things happen: community air quality improves, people in the community are more intimately connected, and a fun and healthy work culture is supported.
