The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises residents to first take advantage of any local drug take back programs available to the public. Visit www.lcswma.org for more details. If no disposal instructions are given on the prescription drug label, medication may be disposed of in your household trash using these steps:
1. Remove them from their original containers and mix them with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter (this makes the drug less appealing to children and pets, and unrecognizable to people who may intentionally go through the trash seeking drugs).
2. Place the mixture in a sealable bag, empty can, or other container to prevent the drug from leaking or breaking out of a garbage bag.
The Elizabethtown Borough Police Department will also collect unwanted prescription medications (pills only - and no gel caps) during normal business hours. Empty the pills from the original container into a clear plastic bag and drop off. Click here for more details.
